29th PSP Annual Conference | Breaking Through Against Compromised Periodontal Health
via Zoom
Sorry…This form is closed to new submissions.

This three-lecture conference will present the various diseases that impact the periodontium, how to manage these patients appropriately, with special emphasis on the proper treatment of periodontally compromised teeth and approach in placing dental implants for such patients with severely reduced periodontium.

Hwey-Chin Yeh

DDS, MS, DABP

Dr. Hwey-Chin Yeh graduated from Chung Shan Medical University School of Dentistry in Taiwan. She received her periodontal specialty training and master degree from Northwestern University Dental School in 1993, and then became a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology in 2000.

Dr. Yeh was the Director and the clinical assistant professor of the Periodontal Department of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital Linkou Medical Center in Taiwan, where she devoted herself to clinic, research and teaching for decades. Lately she maintains her private practice limited to periodontics and implant surgery in Taipei. She is also appointed as a clinical instructor in the Periodontal Department of Taipei Veterans General Hospital.

Dr. Yeh is currently the President of Taiwan Academy of Periodontology in 2022-2023, and actively involves professional societies. Her lectures for the periodontal and dental societies were well received.

Survival or Success?

Promoting the greatest longevity and health of dentitions from a periodontal viewpoint.

Treating periodontally compromised dentitions has been a challenge to dentists. Periodontal treatments spare no effort in saving teeth but couldn't reach its full extend. In contemporary dentistry, dental implants have been considered an optimal choice when teeth are missing. Survival rate was an important evaluation when dental implants initially developed, whereas success of implant is later considered and become the key to treatment plan. In the dilemma of saving teeth and placing implants, we expect either one to be maintained in function and long-term health. This presentation is to share my clinical experiences and long-term observations in treating periodontally compromised dentitions. The pros and cons of different treatment modalities will be discussed.

Not Your Everyday Gum Disease

Discussion of other conditions and diseases that can mimic, exacerbate, or affect the manifestation of plaque-induced periodontal diseases.

Plaque-induced periodontal diseases are characterised by clinical gingival redness and inflammation, bleeding on probing and if progressive, deeper probing depth, clinical attachment loss, bone loss, increased mobility, and eventual tooth loss. However, different systemic and hormonal conditions such as diabetes mellitus and pregnancy pyogenic granuloma, autoimmune diseases such as lichen planus; pemphigoid, and systemic lupus erythematosus, malignant conditions such as squamous cell carcinoma and other local factors such trauma from occlusion can modify, aggravate, and affect the clinical manifestations of classic gum disease posing challenges to the diagnosis and management. This lecture will discuss these different systemic and local conditions that can affect the clinical manifestation and progression of the "everyday qum disease" and will also suggest ways on its diagnosis and management.

The Struggle is Real: Treatment Strategies of Peri-implantitis

Peri-implant diseases lead to peri-implant bone loss, compromising implant outcomes in both function and esthetics. Multiple strategies have been introduced in treating peri-implantitis, including non-surgical and surgical approaches. Numerous factors may affect treatment outcomes and predictability. This presentation will provide:

  • Overview of current understandings in the treatment strategies of peri-implantitis
  • Evaluation of the longitudinal outcomes
  • Discussion of the future trend in peri-implantitis management for better predictability
